Greening Chicago: What Can the Next Mayor Do for the City's Green Future?

02.15.2011

Chicago is about to elect a new mayor for the first time in 22 years. The outgoing Mayor Richard M. Daley has presided over what he claims is now one of the "greenest cities in America," having created the Chicago Department of Environment, drafted the Chicago Climate Action Plan, planted more than 600,000 trees, installed more than 7 million square feet of 'green roofs' (the most in America), and adopted LEED standards for public buildings (the first in America).

Still, much remains to be done and one thing is clear: the next mayor will have an enormous influence over the city's green future. As Chicago positions itself to dig out of fiscal troubles while maintaining its status as a global city, Delta suggests these goals be among the next mayor's top priorities:

New Sustainable Business Incubator to Offer Industrial Workshop and Flex Space

02.15.2011

Sustainable, small-to-medium-size businesses in need of flexible industrial and/or office space can lease an affordable, visible location at the new ReBuilding Exchange Annex & Incubator. The facility, located at the corner of Ashland and Webster avenues in Chicago's Bucktown/Wicker Park neighborhood, is being managed by the Delta Redevelopment Institute (Delta REDI) and will offer like-minded tenants special benefits with their rent.

"We're especially interested in companies that deal with recycled materials or have a similar customer base as the ReBuilding Exchange, which is a strong anchor tenant," says Elise Zelechowski, Associate Director at REDI. "That way, we can work together on joint events, marketing materials, and promotion."

Why Offset? One Company's Perspective

02.15.2011

Energy Works Michigan was ready to offset its carbon footprint. But the Ann Arbor-based non-profit wanted to take it a step further, endeavoring to purchase the kind of offsets that would reinvest in the local community. Delta's Carbon Offset program was a perfect fit.

As an offset aggregator, Delta sells carbon credits and uses the money to fund projects that reduce greenhouse gases or increase sequestering of greenhouse gases. An independent, third-party entity ensures that Delta's credits are high-quality offsets.

RX Finds New Place to Sell Old Building Materials

02.15.2011

The ReBuilding Exchange (RX) is moving to 2160 N. Ashland Avenue on the corner of Webster Avenue later this month and will open for business on March 1. The new RX is double the size of the original, offering expanded inventory, job training, and educational opportunities - an expansion resulting from the organization's remarkable growth and success over the last two years. Don't miss the Grand Opening Fundraiser there on March 12 from 6-10 p.m.

Delta Finances Redevelopment of Downtown Brownfield

02.15.2011

Delta's Great Lakes Redevelopment Fund successfully deployed $5.2 million worth of New Market Tax Credits in December 2010 to redevelop a brownfield property in Chicago's South Loop neighborhood. The tax credits are designed to incentivize investments in blighted neighborhoods, providing a 39-cent tax break for every $1 of investment. The financing will help transform the brownfield into a new LEED-certified building that will serve as Roosevelt University's fieldhouse.

RVs, Poplar Trees, and Greens: Delta Helps NW Indiana Get on the Road to Sustainable Economic Development

02.15.2011

Making gas guzzling Recreational Vehicles greener might seem impossible, but the Delta Redevelopment Institute is working with planners in Elkhart County, Indiana, to do just that. In 2010 Delta helped the hard-hit region develop plans for leveraging its base in RV manufacturing to develop new green industries and jobs. As a result, Genesis Products has agreed to pay for nursery stock that will develop a local source of light plywood that it is currently being imported from overseas and at the same time improve the environmental condition of 5 acres of vacant brownfield land. The plan is to plant 6,500 poplar trees in May that will both remediate the land as well as provide a lightweight, renewable raw material for the nearby RV manufacturing base.

Delta Works to Green Chicago Hospitals

02.15.2011

Delta partnered with Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council (MCHC) to offer eligible member hospitals free energy audits and implementation assistance through the $2.5 million energy efficiency grant program Delta is administering for Cook County. On January 18, Delta and Sieben Energy teamed up to present a brief workshop about energy-saving opportunities available to commercial and industrial facilities and encourage interested hospitals to apply. As 24/7 operations, hospitals are among the largest energy users, but they can achieve significant environmental and economic benefits by taking advantage of energy-reduction incentives and financing options.

Delta Publishes New 'Quick Guides' for Illinois, Michigan

02.15.2011

Most brownfield professionals know that cleaning up a contaminated site for redevelopment makes economic sense, but many don't recognize the benefits of cleaning up in a "greener" or more environmentally sensitive way. That's why Delta developed and published two state-specific "Quick Guides to Greener Cleanups" that provide basic information about greener remediation strategies that can be incorporated throughout all stages of land revitalization. Guides are available online.
