Green Opportunities (GO) App Award
Delta Institute recently conducted the first-ever Green Opportunities App Contest. The contest was part of the Apps 4 Metro Chicago initiative lead by Metropolitan Chicago Information Center. The purpose of the award was to utilized new technologies to help user live, work and play more sustainably in the City of Chicago. Developers used datasets made available by the City, County and State to create apps that could help users be more energy efficient, reduce waste and pollution, conserve water and improve the natural environment.
Judging Process
Three judges reviewed nearly 20 entries against several key criteria, including originality, functionality, longevity and potential impact on environmental practices. The judges were:
William Schleizer, Senior Director, The Delta Institute
Chuck Templeton, Founder, Open Table and OhSoWe
Robert Whittier, Director of Sustainability, Northwestern University
And the Winner Is....
Delta Institute ended up recognizing three highly useful sustainable apps. Two recycling apps, Chicago Recycling Helper and Recycle City Chicago, split the $2,000 first prize and Delta added a $500 honorable mention for an app named "Light Bulb Finder," which also won the EPA's Apps for the Environment Award.
